Ten 7 Season 20

Case 1: Wanted – Cash and Jewellery Scam

Police in Counties Manukau need help to identify the women believed to be involved in a scam targeting elderly Asian woman.

The scammers approach the victim and convince them that they are cursed. The offenders then talk the victim into handing over cash and valuable possessions in order for them to remove the curse. The victim is handed back their bag of possessions and asked not to open the bag for 30 days. Thirty days later, the bag is opened and their money and valuables are gone.

Police believe these scammers are working their way down New Zealand as they have received a dozen reports in Auckland, a few in Wellington and it is their belief they are now operating in the South Island, most likely Christchurch.

Detectives would like to hear from anyone who believes they or a family member has been scammed by these thieves. They would also like to speak with anyone who recognises these woman and could help police stop them before they leave the country.
