Information about import permit applications

Due to the recent firearms laws changes some firearms-related information is under review.

As of 3pm 21 March 2019 changes were made by an Order in Council to bring two additional groups of semi-automatic firearms within the definition of a Military Style Semi-automatic (MSSA) firearm:

  • a semi-automatic firearm that is capable of being used in combination with a detachable magazine (other than one designed to hold 0.22-inch or less rimfire cartridges) that is capable of holding more than 5 cartridges; and
  • a semi-automatic firearm that is a shotgun and is capable of being used in combination with a detachable magazine that is capable of holding more than 5 cartridges.

Please note you may be affected by these changes, which would mean you are no longer able to import or bring a firearm of this type into New Zealand.

There can occasionally be a delay between an application for an import permit being submitted and it being available via the Police IT system. In order to improve our service in the processing of firearms permits, Police wish to hear from you if you have applied for a permit and have not received it within 40 days.

Please contact us at project.firearms@police.govt.nz providing the following information:

  • Name on the application
  • Firearms Licence Number
  • Permit number, if you have one, or a brief description of the permit details
  • Date of application
  • Police district where you lodged the application
