Man charged with kidnapping

A West Auckland student was lured to a North Shore address in the early hours of Tuesday morning, March 30 and was released this morning.

Demands were made with the 25-year-old detained at gunpoint and held at an unknown address for 48 hours.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Sutton says, "The man was lured to the North Shore after talking on an internet chat room. This illustrates that people need to be aware of the dangers of taking part in such chat rooms, especially when meeting people from the internet."

Police made extensive inquiries in China and with Interpol. Detectives from Waitakere CIB worked through the night with some shifts lasting up to 24 hours.

Police located the victim this morning after his release; he was safe and well.

A man appeared in the Waitakere District Court this morning charged with kidnapping. Police inquiries are continuing.
