Police seek help in identifying dead man

1 min read

Auckland Police have taken the unusual step of releasing details of a man’s death and a photo of him in the hope that someone can identify him.

An asian man was found dead at the Newmarket Railway Station in the early hours of Sunday morning the 8th of August.

He wasn’t carrying any identification and it appears that no-one has reported a man matching his description as missing.

Newmarket Police have gone to extensive efforts to try and identify him but haven’t been able to.

"It’s not at all ideal that relatives may discover that he’s died via a media report but we’ve exhausted other avenues and feel it would be more distressing for the family to find out weeks or months later", said Constable Grant Harris.

When he was found, the man was wearing navy blue dress trousers, two pairs of long johns, a grey hooded Mambo sweatshirt, a green long sleeved polo shirt, a black baseball cap with NZ embossed in white on it, a light green jacket, a citizen ‘Eco-drive’ watch. He was carrying a gerber tool and some NZ and Hong Kong currency.

The man has a quite big brown mole or birthmark under his left eye that can’t be seen in this photo.

"We’re not looking for anyone else in connection with his death at this stage, there don’t appear to be any suspicious circumstances, however, once we identify him and find out more about him, it’s possible that may change".
