Police Commissioner orders file search

1 min read

Acting Police Commissioner Steve Long said that he was concerned with allegations implying that Police may have treated the 1981 incident, in which an Army Cadet died, differently from other homicide investigations.

Mr Long said he acknowledged the distress of the victim’s family and pledged that Police would do all they could to assist in a thorough review of the issues raised. The matter would be reported to the Police Complaints Authority tomorrow morning.

"I have called for any file documentation that may still exist relating to the original investigation. Hopefully the file has been retained even though the charge was firearms related rather than a more serious charge.

"Any police officer or former police officers identified as having a role in the matter will be spoken to," said Mr Long

The Acting Commissioner said any inquiry ordered by the Government would have direct relevance to this fact-finding stage and Police will monitor developments carefully.
