Police report a death without a body

1 min read

Police are taking the very unusual step in reporting the death of John Tam to the Coroner without a body or any idea of how he died - eight years after he went missing from the Tidal Road market gardens in Mangere.

Detective Inspector Bernie Hollewand says the police are taking this step not to close the file but to achieve some degree of closure for the family, as well as to offer the opportunity to those who wish to provide the inquiry with fresh information.

John Tam was reported missing from the family home and market garden business on the 17th November 1996. John had retired from working in the family business as a gardener. His sister last saw John after he visited her at her home in Mangere a week before he was reported missing.

"I would like to remind those who may have information that it can be given in confidence and immunity from prosecution will also be considered if the person concerned is not a principal in any crime committed against John Tam," said Detective Inspector Hollewand.

"Regardless of the Coroner making a finding, the case will always remain open until the mystery surrounding John Tam is solved."
