Masterton Police are late this afternoon continuing to search for the person responsible for an overnight shooting in the town which has left one man injured.

Inspector John Johnston, Wairarapa Area Commander, says the Wellington District Armed Offenders Squad has been called out to assist local staff with search warrants at properties in and around Masterton.

Police believe the shooting was gang related. The victim, a man in his 20s, has bullet injuries to a leg and this afternoon was being transferred from Masterton to Wellington Hospital for surgery.

"Our scene investigations are continuing in the Miriam Street area and around the creekbed where the injured man was found by a passerby this morning," Inspector Johnston says.

"The reasons for the shooting are still not clear."
