Wellington Police are planning a high visibility operation when the Barmy Army and New Zealand rugby fans hit the city next month.
Inspector Paul Berry, Wellington Area Police Operations Manager, says extra staff from across the Wellington District will be working in and around the city for both matches but particularly around the period of the second test on 2 July.
"The week leading up to the test will be a big one in the city," Inspector Berry says. "We know people want to have a good time but we want them to do so safely."
Special attention will be given to traffic and alcohol related issues with checkpoint operations planned, strict enforcement of liquor licensing and a 'satellite' police command base operating from Courtenay Place over the test weekend.
"Our planning and response to the events is geared to encouraging a safe atmosphere so people can enjoy themselves, before, during and after the matches.
"Traffic will be heavy so we want people to plan their trip, don't leave it until the last minute to get to the stadium; use public transport including trains and the park and ride shuttles," Inspector Berry says.
"There will be no parking at the stadium unless you have a pre purchased ticket."
Inspector Berry says police are working closely with Wellington City Council, Positively Wellington Tourism, Westpac Stadium and others to ensure the festivities around the rugby go without a hitch.
