Tsunami warning cancelled

1 min read

Residents in Herbertville and Akitio have been advised that they can safely return to their homes as the tsunami warning for the area is cancelled.

Central District Police have been working throughout the morning alongside regional and district councils monitoring the tsunami threat, and assisting Tararua District Council with the evacuation of two residential areas that had the potential to be affected by the threat.

Operations Inspector David White said: "We have been advised that a 40cm wave was recorded at the East Cape and that the warning has been cancelled. Residents in coastal areas should remain vigilant and take care as the chance of strong currents remains."
