1 min read

Police are continuing to seek information in relation to reports of four kayaks and four people in an inflatable boat being seen in heavy seas off the shoreline at Kaka Point township yesterday morning (Sunday 11 October).

As part of a water SAR operation, coastal searches of the Catlins and Kaka Point coastlines through to Dunedin have been completed this morning under the coordination of the Wellington Rescue Coordination Centre. Following an extensive search of coastal areas and open sea, the search has been suspended.

Snr Sgt Richard Whitmore of Balclutha Police said the inquiry phase of the operation is ongoing and focused on identifying the people involved in the search and rescue operation to confirm that they are safe and well.

"No reports of overdue kayakers have been received. Police are continuing to make inquiries relating to information received from the public following media releases on Sunday," he said.

"We are appealing for members of the party involved, or people who may have information about any group of people who planned to kayak in the Kaka Point area to contact their nearest police station or Balclutha Police on (03) 418 0203.
