Wellington Police found escaped prisoner Christopher Hatley when a search warrant was executed this afternoon at a Newtown address.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Perry, Wellington CIB, says Hatley, 23, who escaped after an appearance in the Wellington District Court yesterday, was located at 3.55pm today.

"Wellington CIB have been making inquiries throughout the day and with the assistance of the Armed Offenders Squad, executed a search warrant in Newtown this afternoon.

"Hatley was with one other person at the flat and is now in our custody. He will be reappearing in the Wellington District Court tomorrow charged with escaping from custody."

Detective Senior Sergeant Perry said the person found with Hatley was not the other escaped prisoner, Albert Karl Lenin Stretch, a 24-year-old Maori, with links to Porirua.

Police are still trying to find Stretch.
