Man Arrested at Serious Crash Scene

A 20 year old male driver will appear in the North Shore District Court on Thursday, after he was arrested at a serious crash scene yesterday for Excess Breath Alcohol.

The charge follows a car v motorcycle crash on Birkdale Road, yesterday afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Gary Hill of North Shore Police says the incident happened at about 6.15pm, on Sunday 19 February 2006, close to the vicinity of the local Birkdale shops.

"A 20 year old male driver was at the wheel of a Nissan Pulsar as it was travelling south on Birkdale Road. Two passengers were also in the vehicle."

"As the Nissan approached a left hand bend, it veered onto the wrong side of the road, narrowly missing another vehicle travelling north. The Nissan then crashed into an oncoming motorcycle, hitting it head on."

"The motor cyclist, a local fireman, is in a critical condition in hospital."

The 20 year old driver was then arrested by Police at the scene after returning an excess breath alcohol reading. Neither the driver nor his passengers were injured.

"The North Shore Serious Crash Unit is investigating. Further charges are likely to be laid in relation to this incident," Senior Sergeant Gary Hill said.

"A local drink drive campaign is planned on the North Shore this week which means that drivers will be breath tested, anywhere, at anytime, by Police," he said.
