The Search & Rescue (SAR) organisations within the Nelson Area are holding a training night on Emergency Flare Activation this Sunday, 17 October 2010.
The training has been programmed so the public in and around Tasman Bay can participate by viewing the training activations in both daylight hours and darkness to get a good perspective of what emergency flares look like from differing distances.
At 7.15pm the vessel Punawai will be at the following location 41° 13.25 south 173° 12.23 east, which is 3.5 Nm on a bearing of 326° true from the Cut, Nelson Harbour.
At 7.30pm the vessel Cappy will be at the following location 41° 05.91 south 173°12.99 east which is 10 Nm on a bearing of 349° true from the Cut, Nelson Harbour.
At 7.20pm the Punawai will fire three parachute flares at one minute intervals and then immediately after the third parachute flare is fired, activate two hand held flares.
At 7.35pm the Cappy will fire three parachute flares at one minute intervals and then immediately after the third parachute flare is fired, activate two hand held flares
The flare activation process as above will be repeated at the same respective locations from each vessel at:
8.30pm from the Punawai, 8.45pm from the Cappy.
Appropriate Marine Radio calls will be made before each flare display alerting other shipping in the area that they are happening.
