1 min read

A middle-aged woman was killed and her passenger critically injured in a crash involving a car and a truck on River Road, State Highway 2, near Upper Hutt this afternoon.

Sergeant Rodger Hough, Upper Hutt Police, said the fatality happened at 12.50pm at the intersection of Moonshine Road and River Road, State Highway 2.

The woman, whose name won't be released until all immediate next of kin are advised, was killed instantly. Her front seat passenger, an elderly woman, was taken by ambulance first to Hutt Hospital and then transferred to Wellington Hospital.

The two women were the only occupants of the white four-door Toyota Corolla hatch. The driver of the Hino truck was very shaken but unhurt.

Sergeant Hough said it appears the crash happened when the car pulled out of Moonshine Road and into the path of the south-bound truck.

Police are appealing for people who witnessed the crash to call Upper Hutt Police on telephone 04 527 2300, and ask for Sergeant Hough or Constable Mike Black.

River Road was closed from 12.50 until 3.25pm while emergency services cleared the scene. Traffic was diverted through Fergusson Drive.
