Officer continues to recover in hospital

1 min read

One of the Dunedin police officers allegedly attacked in the city last night is still in Dunedin Hospital and it is not yet known whether she will be discharged today.

The female officer, with nearly six years service, suffered a broken wrist in the incident and is also undergoing a scan for possible head injuries.

The incident occurred at around 11.49pm last evening when two officers were completing a routine bail check at a St Kilda address.

While the female officer was attempting to arrest a man for breach of bail conditions for consuming alcohol, she was allegedly thrown to the ground and repeatedly punched around the head and face. A second officer came to assist her and was bitten on the upper thigh by a dog that was at the property.

Another officer was called to the scene and was also bitten by the dog, suffering a puncture wound to the leg.

These two officers were treated and discharged from hospital last night.

As a result of the incident, three arrests were made.

A 22-year-old male was due to appear in the Dunedin Court today on charges of breach of bail, resisting arrest and aggravated injury; a 15-year-old male is to appear in the Youth Court on a charge of aggravated injury; and a 22-year-old woman is likely to appear later in the week on a charge of obstruction.

The dog has been seized by police.

Police are continuing their inquiries into the incident.
