Police welcome finding on pursuit

1 min read

Canterbury Police have welcomed the findings of an Independent Police Conduct Authority investigation into the pursuit of a driver who killed two other motorists in Christchurch on 26 August 2010.

The report, released today, found the Police pursuit was justified and conducted according to law and policy.

Acting Canterbury District Commander, Inspector John Price, says the report confirmed that Police policies on pursuits were robust, and that the officers involved had acted professionally and appropriately throughout the pursuit.

"The findings show that the officers were fully justified in taking the action they did," he says.

"They were pursuing a disqualified driver who was driving dangerously and at speed, over the legal blood alcohol limit, and in a car with no warrant or registration.

"Ultimately it was the actions of a driver who made the decision to flee that caused this fatal crash.

"Unfortunately this pursuit had a tragic outcome, and our thoughts are with the families of Norman Fitt and Deidre Jordan who lost their lives.

"Incidents like these are also difficult for our officers, who are absolutely committed to keeping our roads safe for everybody.

"Our message to all drivers is to abide by the road rules, and to stop if they are requested to by Police."
