Attempted Robbery in Birkenhead

2 min read

North Shore Police are investigating an attempted robbery in Birkenhead yesterday.

Detective Steve MATHESON says police have a good description of the two offenders after the incident at DOLLAR DEALERS 65 Birkenhead Road, at 7.50am on Wednesday 11 April 2007. The circumstances indicate an attempted robbery has gone wrong.

"A male employee of the company has arrived early at work and parked his black Subaru WRX at the rear of the business address. While walking to the front entrance of Dollar Dealers he has been approached by two males."

"The two men threatened the employee with what we believe was a firearm," he said.

"The two offenders marched the employee back to his vehicle. They forced him into the back seat and then tied him up. They threatened the employee. One offender then drove the Subaru back up the driveway with the owner still inside. The second offender walked up the drive way towards Dollar Dealers and began walking towards Onewa Road."

"About this time several other employees of Dollar Dealers have gathered outside the company entrance. The offender at the wheel of the Subaru notices the group. He drives south along Birkenhead Avenue. The Subaru enters a roundabout and then travels north still in Birkenhead Avenue. At traffic lights it turns right onto Onewa Road."

"The car and its driver then travelled down Onewa Road. At Woodside Avenue the vehicle has turned left before being abandoned in the car park of St Mary's Church."

"The directions and mode of travel by this offender are unknown from this point. The startled employee managed to quickly free himself. He then called police."

"We would like anyone who saw any suspicious activity or saw persons loitering in the vicinity of the WINZ office near the corner of Birkenhead Avenue and Onewa Road between 7.30 - 8.00am yesterday to call us at the North Shore CIB at any time on Telephone 0274 949 112," Detective Matheson said.
