Body found in river appears to be male

1 min read

Christchurch Police say a body located in the Heathcote River this morning appears to be that of a middle-aged male Caucasian.

Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey says the deceased was wearing a red and gold cycle helmet, and a brown checked shirt.

A bicycle has been located close to the river not far from where the body was found, however it is not known if this is connected to the death, says Detective Senior Sergeant Harvey.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who may be able to help Police with identifying the deceased."

Detective Senior Sergeant Harvey says it is too early to determine the cause of death or whether the death is suspicious.

At this stage the body has yet to be recovered from the river, and Police remain on site as investigations continue.

The body was located in the Heathcote River between Rutherford Street and Connal Street at approximately 8.30 this morning.

Anyone with information relating that may assist in identifying the deceased is asked to contact Christchurch Police on (03) 3637400.
