Police response to volcanic activity

1 min read

Police are working to assist the Department of Conservation following a gas and ash eruption at the Te Maari crater on Mount Tongariro this afternoon.

Area Commander for Taupo Police, Inspector Steve Bullock said: "We have no road closures in place but I would discourage sight-seers from travelling to the area. We don't want unnecessary congestion to contend with, and want to ensure the road network remains free-flowing just in case there is any further volcanic activity."

There have been no immediate reports of any injuries and whilst Police remain as always in a state of readiness there are currently no search and rescue requirements.
