Failing to stop leads to crash and three injured

1 min read

Two passengers in a car travelling with incorrect number plates are in Middlemore Hospital with head injuries after the vehicle they were in crashed into an oncoming car on Roscommon Rd, Wiri.

A middle-aged woman in the on-coming vehicle has leg and chest injuries and is receiving medical attention.

One man, believed to be the driver of the offending vehicle, is with Police at Balmoral Police Station and is likely to face a number of charges relating to driving offences.

A Police pursuit of the suspicious vehicle got underway at about 11.30 this morning after a patrol car noted the number plates on the Subaru in a carpark on the corner of Mt Eden Rd and Symonds St, didn't correspond with the vehicle they were on.

The pursuit continued through Mt Eden village, onto Grange Rd, Dominion Rd and towards Balmoral Rd, at which time a different Police vehicle took over and was assisted by the Air Support Unit [Eagle] overhead.

The land-based Police officers lost sight of the offending vehicle once it had gone over Mangere Bridge, but were kept appraised of its progress by Eagle staff until it crashed in Roscommon Rd.

One occupant, believed to have been the driver, tried to abscond from the scene by attempting to carjack another vehicle but was apprehended by an officer with the Police Dog Section.

The Police Complaints Authority is being advised of the incident which will be investigated by the Balmoral Strategic Traffic Unit. Counties/Manukau Serious Crash Unit oversaw the crash scene and has cleared the crash vehicles from it.
