One dead in crash near Darfield

Christchurch Police have confirmed that a man aged in his 70s has died as a result of a motor vehicle crash in the Selwyn District late this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the intersection of Coaltrack Road and Bealey Road just after 11.45 today.

The deceased was the driver of a car which collided with a four-wheel drive vehicle. He was confirmed deceased at the scene.

The man's wife was a passenger in the vehicle. She has been transferred by helicopter to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the 4WD was transferred to hospital with moderate injuries.

Police say initial indications are that the deceased's vehicle may have travelled through an intersection into the path of the oncoming 4WD.
