Show week

1 min read

Coming to town for Show week? This is traditionally (and hopefully!) hot, busy, lots of people, too much drink, and easy pickings for the burglar and car thief. Locals and visitors are warned to leave no chances for the opportunist thief and to keep an eye on their valuables.

Senior Sergeant Peter Laloli says some burglars specialise in Show Week and there are always those who are around motels.

"Motels are often an easy target for thieves who know that doors tend be left unlocked for latecomers to get in during Show Week. On the hot nights we (usually) get at this time of year, windows also get left wide open, so make sure the safety catch is on. People are relaxed and cash and valuables tend to be left lying around," says Pete Laloli. "Thieves know from experience where to look for wallets and jewellery. Money should be hidden or put with other valuables in the motel safe."

Traffic around Cup Day- Tuesday 13 November

A new traffic plan will be in place for Cup Day next Tuesday 13 November after there were issues last year with traffic leaving Addington Raceway after the cup race.

Senior Sergeant Rob Patterson says that the exit has been changed to get people away more quickly.

The major change is that the Jack Hinton Drive exit to Whiteleigh Street will be closed from 2pm. All traffic will be directed through Twiggers Street/ Lincoln Road/ Wrights Road.

"Just follow the directions and please have patience," says Senior Sergeant Patterson.

Rob Patterson says that Cup Day is a fun day which 'showcases' Canterbury.

"Canterbury at its finest, this is a huge event." he says. "There are very few arrests and noticeably less that there are at other comparable events where there are 26 thousand people. "
