Man arrested after Christchurch homicide

1 min read

Christchurch Police have launched a homicide enquiry following the death of a woman at a block of flats in Spreydon this evening [Saturday 20 July].

Police were called to a housing complex in Macgibbon Place, Spreydon, at about 6.30pm by a resident reporting the death of a woman at the complex.

On arrival police found the body of a female outside one of the units.

A 59-year old Christchurch man, who is a resident of a nearby unit, was located at the complex and arrested without incident.

He has been charged with assault in relation to the incident, and will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brian Archer says it is likely more serious charges will be laid. Police are not seeking any other persons in relation to the death.

He says the identity of the victim has not yet been confirmed, other than that she was resident of the complex.

The scene has been cordoned off and a scene examination will be carried out tomorrow [Sunday].

Investigators will also be conducting area enquiries to establish what has occurred.
