Porirua Police have arrested and charged an 18-year-old youth in relation to the car crash in which pedestrian Ron Chippindale, 74, was killed on Tuesday.

Inspector John Spence, Kapiti Mana Area Commander, said the youth was arrested this afternoon and bailed to appear in the Porirua District Court on 22 February. He has been charged with driving in a dangerous manner causing death.

The charge is laid under Section 36 (1) (b) of the Land Transport Act 1998. Penalties if convicted can incur a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years or a fine not exceeding $20,000, and disqualification.

Inspector Spence said Mr Chippindale's family has been advised of the decision to charge the car's driver. As the matter is now before the court he cannot comment further.
