Cruise rape investigation concluded

1 min read

Police investigating the allegation of rape aboard the P&O cruise ship Pacific Star yesterday informed the complainant in the matter that there is insufficient evidence to justify criminal proceedings.

Auckland Police investigated the incident that was alleged to have occurred in the early hours of 31 December 2007 in waters off New Caledonia.

"Police have interviewed a large number of people who were on board the ship, including P&O staff," Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Beard says.

"The end result of the forensic and associated investigations has shown there is insufficient evidence to justify proceeding further."

Overseas authorities have also been advised of the decision, including the P&O cruise company which was co-operative throughout the inquiry.
