Waikato Police investigating yesterday's stabbing of a 2-year-old boy in Te Aroha hope to complete their scene examination this afternoon.

The incident happened about 3pm, at the Centennial Ave property where the child lived.

Detective Sergeant Rod Carpinter of Matamata- Piako CIB said area enquiries and witness interviews are continuing at this time.

'We're looking into whether there was any suspicious activity in the area prior to the stabbing," he said.

The little boy's condition is described as good and he is expected to remain in hospital for at least two days.

"He is as well as can be expected in the circumstances and had a bath this morning.

"A person of interest to the enquiry has been spoken to by investigators but we are unable to offer any further information at this time," said Mr Carpinter.
