Waikato Police are currently investigating the tragic death of a toddler, run over in a quiet residential street in Matamata yesterday.

Sergeant Graham McGurk of Matamata Police said the 18-month-old boy was with his mother working at the front of their Jellicoe Rd property about 6pm.

"It appears the wee boy has followed the cat out their drive and along to the neighbour's driveway.

"Tragically, at the same time as this a young man from the house next door was reversing his car and the toddler was struck by the vehicle," he said.

Those at the scene said the incident happened in a matter of seconds, flown to Waikato Hospital with serious injuries the young boy died of his injuries a short time after arrival.
