Woman dies after fall in gorge

A woman who fell into a gorge during a bridge swing earlier today (Saturday, 7 March) has died.

The 18-year-old woman was a member of the Massey University Alpine Club and was one of a large group of people undertaking an introductory course. The exercise involved jumping from the Ballance Bridge, which is the Woodville side of the Manawatu Gorge, on a swing rope.

The incident happened around 2.45pm when the woman fell around 22 metres. She was taken to Palmerston North Hospital in a critical condition and sadly died during the evening.

Her family have been notified of her death but her name is not being released at this stage.

Police and OSH are investigating the incident.
