Residents in Napier are asked to check their neighbours and property following the end of the siege incident.
Detective Superintendent Rod Drew says this is in recognition of the significant damage a kilometre or more away which can be caused by the type of high powered weapons used by the gunman.
"Police have been checking the immediate area. But we want to be sure, even though it is highly unlikely, that no one else has been injured by a stray bullet.
"Given the tremendous community spirit which has already been shown I ask residents to check families and neighbours to make sure everyone is accounted for.
"I stress that it is highly unlikely anyone else is injured but let us be on the safe side."
Mr Drew also asked people to check their property for damage.
"We are asking members of the public to report any damage to their property or motor vehicles which they believe may have been caused by the gunfire."
Mr Drew said the full scene examination begins properly today but would take several days.
"We hope first to clear parts of the road where shots were fired. We will then be able to move our cordon to let some of those more immediate neighbours back into their homes."
"Police are in touch with those residents to keep them updated. We again thank them for their patience and understanding while we carry out this important work." he said.
