1 min read

Attributable to Senior Sergeant Tristan Murray:

A 28-year-old man has been arrested following a number of dishonesty offences committed recently in the Ōhope area.

Over the two nights spanning from Thursday, 30 June to Saturday, 2 July three vehicles were broken into on a shared property in Ōhope.

Numerous items were stolen from the vehicles, including bank cards.

In a separate incident, a bike and a helmet were stolen from another dwelling.

Edgecumbe Police arrested the Edgecumbe local who is due to appear in the Whakatāne District Court on Tuesday, 12 July on charges relating to burglary, theft, and unlawfully using a document.

Some property has been recovered and staff are now working to return these items to their rightful owners.

Enquiries are ongoing to locate a number of other stolen items, which remain outstanding.

This is a timely reminder for vehicle owners to keep security top of mind.

Please make sure you lock your vehicles when you leave them, and always remove keys from the vehicle.

Park off the street wherever possible, or in well-lit areas, and always remove any valuables.

Anyone wishing to report suspicious activity around vehicles should call 111 if it is happening now, or 105 to make a report after the fact.
