Description of suspect in Washdyke attempted abduction

Police have released a description of the suspect in the attempted abduction of a 13-year old Timaru girl at Washdyke last night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marion Neill says the alleged offender is described as a male Caucasian, of dark complexion, aged in his twenties, approximately 174cm (5ft 8in) tall, clean-shaven, with dark hair and of solid build.

He was reported to be wearing a cap, a white hoodie with a grey triangular pattern and maroon jeans.

The offender has not yet been located, however Police are progressing a positive line of enquiry, Detective Senior Sergeant Neill says.

Investigations into the incident today have included completion of a scene examination at Sir Basil Arthur Park. Police have also examined a Mazda hatchback vehicle located there.

The victim has been interviewed again today and is coping well. "Police and the girl's family would like to acknowledge the actions of the witness, whose intervention may well have prevented a much more serious outcome," Detective Senior Sergeant Neill says.

Timaru Police are continuing to appeal for information from anyone who was in the vicinity of Sir Basil Arthur Park between 7.45 and 8.20 pm, or who has information regarding the incident.
