1 min read

Emergency services attended the scene of a two vehicle crash near Chaneys off-ramp south of the Waimakiriri River bridge which occurred at around 5.18pm tonight 10 May 2015.

Canterbury Police understand that a south-bound van has collided with a another south-bound 4x4 towing a trailer. The 4x4 has left the road and collided with a tree a short distance from the south-bound lane.

There was one person in the van and two people in the 4x4. The two people in the 4x4 have been confirmed as deceased at the scene.

The deaths have been referred to the coroner. No details of either person will be released until formal identification and the process to inform next of kin have been completed.

The driver of the van was taken to Christchurch Hospital as a precaution where he is being assessed.

Canterbury Police investigations are ongoing.

SH1 has been closed to traffic while emergency services responded and Canterbury Police Serious Crash Unit completed a scene examination.  SH1 is expected to reopen at approximately 10pm.

Canterbury Police would like to thank the members of the public who witnessed the crash for their help. Police would also like to thank other members of the public for their patience while diversions are/have been in place.

Unfortunately two more people will not complete their journey this weekend, adding to the tragic loss of life following fatal crashes across New Zealand.   This a timely reminder for all drivers in New Zealand to take care on our roads and drive socially to ensure all road users, drivers and passengers, reach their destination safely.

An update will be provided at some stage tomorrow.
