At 4.10pm this afternoon Police were called to a Mt Wellington property.
Firemen attending a fire at a house on Harding Avenue found a woman inside who had died.
Police and the Fire Service are investigating whether the fire is suspicious and a scene examination is underway.
The deceased is a middle-aged woman. The body of the victim has now been removed from the scene and a post-mortem examination will be held to confirm the cause of death.
The scene will remain under Police guard overnight.
The victim has been identified and Police are working to notify her next of kin.
