Over 5000 prevention pamphlets were distributed yesterday during a monthly one-day operation run by the Counties Manukau Police. This month Counties Manukau East staff concentrated on car crime. Community support was overwhelming with over 60 volunteers taking part. Members of Maori and Pacific Wardens, Neighbourhood Support, Community Patrols, Church Groups and the Asian Crime Reduction Council all took time out of their days to help distribute pamphlets alongside Police.
Disappointingly amongst the thousands of secured cars over 750 vehicles were identified to be either insecure or have valuable items on display.
Counties Manukau Police East Prevention Manager Ann Wilkie says the number of issues identified raises some concerns.
"We found an array of highly desirable items in plain view in cars such as iPhones, iPads, cameras, GPS units and even handbags. At one location a 3 year old child was found alone in the car with the keys still in the ignition."
It is imperative that car owners secure their cars and make sure their possessions are either removed or are out of sight. Thieves are constantly on the lookout for opportunities to get their hands on valuable items and by removing them you remove the risk” says Inspector Wilkie.
The Operation is run through each of the four Counties Manukau Police Districts monthly, concentrating on an area of concern within the community.
