Patient dead after ambulance crash in Northland

Police are investigating a crash in Northland between an ambulance and a power pole.

The critically unwell patient travelling in the back of the ambulance at the time has since died.

The investigation is ongoing, and it’s not known at this stage if the crash was a contributing factor to the patient’s death, however this will be determined after further police investigation.

Senior Sgt Chris McLellan, Area Prevention Manger of Northland District Police says Police have completed initial investigations of the crash and will be working with the family of the deceased and the staff from St John who are involved over the coming  days to ensure appropriate support is provided.

“Ambulance staff go out every day to save lives and it’s very unfortunate that in this case that there’s been a crash.  One of the St John ambulance officers attending the patient has suffered minor to moderate injuries.”

Police will continue to investigate the cause of this incident.
