Update following double fatality on SH1 south of Waimakiriri River bridge

1 min read

Canterbury Police investigations are ongoing into a fatal two vehicle crash near Chaneys off-ramp south of the Waimakiriri River bridge last night (10 May 2015).

Witnesses report that a south-bound white Toyota Hi Ace van has collided with the trailer being towed by a dark blue 4x4 Toyota Surf, also travelling south-bound. The 4x4 has collided with a tree a short distance from the south-bound lane.  The two male occupants in the 4x4 were confirmed as deceased at the scene.

The deaths have been referred to the coroner.  No details of the deceased will be released until formal identification and the process to inform next of kin have been completed.

The male driver of the van was discharged from Christchurch Hospital late last night and has been interviewed by Police in relation to the incident.

Canterbury Police investigations are ongoing and it is too early to comment on whether any charges will be laid.

Police are currently in the process of speaking to a number of witness who stayed at the scene or contacted Police last night.

Canterbury Police would like to thank the Fire Service, St John and the members of the public who called emergency services straight away and attempted to help the occupants of both vehicles.

Canterbury Police will provide a further update later this week once formal identification has taken place and next of kin have been fully informed.
