Sometimes, to break something you need unity.

Police staff around the country and across our workgroups are getting behind this year’s theme for International Women’s Day, which falls today [Tuesday 8 March].

The campaign is #BreakTheBias, which asks us to imagine a gender-equal world.

The day is embraced by the New Zealand Police Women’s Advisory Network, and fully supported by the Executive.

“The theme ties in perfectly with our Values, particularly Respect and Valuing Diversity,” says Tania Kura, Deputy Commissioner: Leadership and Capability.

“As an organisation, we have made immense strides in these areas but we need events like International Women’s Day to hold a mirror up to ourselves to check our progress.

“One of the key messages I take away from today’s theme is the sustained striving toward a world that’s free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination.

“The goals not only match our own aspirations in Police but, if we adopt them, we can contribute to the increasing fairness in society and our communities.”
