Waikato Police are seeing an increase in stolen vehicles.

In July, 296 vehicles were stolen across the district, with 236 of those in the Hamilton City area. Another 93 vehicles were broken into in an attempt to steal them.

Offenders are typically gaining access by smashing a window or forcing the side locks open. There are things you can do to deter them though.

Be sure to lock and secure your vehicles and, whenever possible, park them off the street or in a well-lit place.

Remember to remove your valuables from your vehicles when you park up too, including wallets and bags, and avoid leaving coins visible in the middle console.

If you see something suspicious, please call 111.
