Police in Whanganui are investigating an alleged hit and run incident in which 79 year old great-grandmother Fay Butler tragically passed away.

At about 1:50am on Wednesday 28 August Fay was out walking in the Anzac Parade, Helmore Street area and as she was crossing the road, she was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop. Some passerbys have stopped and tried to render first aid while waiting for the ambulance but unfortunately, Fay has passed away at the scene.

Fay was a much-loved family member who was very bubbly, outgoing, sociable and caring. She was close to her family and they miss her dearly.

Police have conducted wider area enquiries and have established that a vehicle was travelling along Anzac Parade at the time of Fay’s death. A witness has heard a car travelling at normal road speed before hearing a thud. The driver has decided not to stop but Police know the vehicle would likely have sustained some damage that would require repair.

Police have canvassed CCTV in the area and identified a number of vehicles that were in the area at the time. They have spoken to all the drivers apart from one who was driving a large dark SUV. Police aren’t saying that this is the car that hit Fay but the driver may have crucial information that could help this investigation.

This has had a massive impact on Fay’s family so they and Whanganui Police appeal for anyone who may know anything at all to come forward and help bring them some answers.
