Police in Nelson are investigating an alleged sexual violation in the CBD area on Saturday 20 October 2018.

The victim and a friend parked up at the Montgomery Square carpark and decided to visit a few nearby bars. The victim became separated from her friend and when the friend returned to their car, she could not locate the victim. About 5 minutes later, the victim returned to the car in an upset state. The pair had intended to stay in town so they’ve gone to sleep.

In the morning, the victim woke up in pain and with items of clothing missing and she felt that something wasn’t right. She discovered bruises and she had a fractured foot and she believed something sexual had happened to her.

As a result of a medical examination and the victim’s statement, Police believe a sexual violation occurred during this incident. Police are very concerned that the victim has no memory of this incident and as a result, she could not have been in a position to consent to any sexual activity at the time. The victim also believes that her drink may have been spiked and this could contribute to a loss of memory.

Police have conducted a number of enquiries and they have canvassed CCTV in the area. There were various people around that evening that may have valuable information to the investigation and there is one man who was in the carpark about 5 minutes before the victim returned to her car. Police are not saying that this man was in any way involved in this incident but Police would really like to speak with him as he may have seen something that could be helpful.

The impact this event has had on the victim is immense and she is still struggling nearly a year on.

Nelson Police would like to speak with anyone that has any information about this incident.
