Police in Hamilton are investigating a serious assault that occurred between Macdonald and Saxbys Road at 7pm on Friday 11th June.

The victim and his friend were taking photos on the roundabout waiting to be picked up by family members when a car pulled up beside them and four youths got out of the vehicle and confronted them, then chased them down Saxbys Road towards Ohaupo Road.

The victim was hit in the head with a weapon, luckily the blow struck a branch before making contact with his head, reducing the impact but still causing considerable harm.

The victim’s friend ran with him round the corner onto Morrison Street away from the group, where they were helped by a member of the public, and the attackers gave up the chase and headed back towards their car on the corner of Macdonald and Saxbys.

The victim received a 9cm gash to the left side of his head, requiring 23 staples. He also sustained a fractured skull, resulting in a couple of days in hospital. A blow like his could have been fatal, and the victim is lucky to be alive. The attackers were not known to the victim and his friend.

The main suspect is described as:

  • Approx 182cm / 6’0”
  • “Light brown skin”
  • Very short hair
  • Skinny build
  • Wearing a white t-shirt and green camo shorts

Police have learnt there was another male in the area who was chased in a similar manner minutes before this attack. They are appealing for that male to come forward and assist with the investigation.

The victim is now afraid to be alone and the event has had a serious effect on his family, who are worried it will happen again to someone else.

The suspects left their vehicle parked by the roundabout while the attack occurred and Police would like to speak to anyone who saw it on the night, so that those responsible can be held accountable.
