Police are investigating a sexual assault that occurred in Christchurch in April.

A young woman was sexually assaulted in the suburb of Shirley on the 4th of April this year.

The young woman left a party at her friend's house and walked along Shirley Road, and as she got to the corner of Shirley Road and Marshland Road, she was approached by an unknown male. They had a conversation opposite the Z Station, then crossed Marshland Road and headed towards the Shirley Library where they had a brief conversation, and the victim decided she needed to go home, so continued along Marshland Road towards Hammersley Ave.

As she was walking along Hammersley Ave, she looked behind her, and noticed the male was following her. They both crossed the intersection and the male approached her, and after she clearly stated she needed to leave, he grabbed her by the shoulders, pushed her up against the fence, and sexually assaulted her. Luckily she managed to escape, and then called Police.

The suspect is described as:

  • Early 20's
  • 170cm / 5'7"
  • Solid build
  • Full beard with a bit of ginger in it

Police have CCTV footage of a male who arrived in the area prior to the assault in a white vehicle. He then walked towards the corner of Shirley and Marshland Road. Police are not saying he's involved, but he may have some valuable information, and would like to hear from him. Police would like to speak to anyone who recognises the male in the footage.

The incident has had a huge impact on the victim and her family, and finding the person responsible will go a long way to helping with her recovery.
