Police in Wellington are investigating a sexual assault that took place at the Taputeranga Marine Reserve carpark, between Lyall Bay and Princess Bay on Wellington’s south coast, on Tuesday 6th April 2021 at around 10:30pm.

A young woman went to the area to enjoy the scenery and unwind after a hard day. She parked her car and got out to sit on a sleeper, and noticed a vehicle driving past several times. This raised her suspicions. The vehicle parked behind her car, and a male got out of the passenger seat. She was suddenly pulled from behind and onto the ground where the male sexually assaulted her. During the assault the woman managed to get free and run to her vehicle where she locked herself inside. The male got up and walk past her vehicle before getting into the passenger side of his vehicle. The woman feared there could be two people involved, and that if she drove home she may be followed. She called her partner and stayed in her vehicle.

This attack has raised concerns especially in its premeditated nature. The attacker has made sure the woman is completely alone before assaulting her behind her vehicle so that no one driving past would be able to see.

The victim has been traumatised by this attack. It has made her feel extremely unsafe to the point where she struggles to leave home. This has had a major impact on her work and social life. She can't go anywhere at night as she is too afraid.

Police are appealing to anyone in the area at the time, and for those who may have dashcam or CCTV footage.

The attacker is described as:

  • Male
  • Light complexion
  • Shoulder length brown hair
  • Approx 175cm / 5’9”
  • Wearing black clothing

The vehicle of interest is described as:

  • Older style
  • White
  • 4 door Sedan
  • Missing rear passenger hub cap
