Police in Auckland are investigating a serious assault that took place on Queen Street on Sunday 9th May 2021.

At around 2.45am the victim was walking up Queen Street opposite Wyndham Street with his partner and a friend. They had been in town for about an hour or so and were about to head home.

In a completely random and callous attack a male ran up behind the victim and punched him in the head from behind, seeming to knock him out almost instantly. The suspect then threw another punch that connected with the victim's head as he fell to the ground. A third punch narrowly missed the victim’s head before he fell head first onto the pavement.

The suspect then turned around and walked casually away from the victim without checking if he was okay. Members of the public came to the victim’s aid before the police arrived shortly after.

Following the attack the suspect walked north down Queen Street. In further CCTV footage a male who matches the description of this person walks down Shortland Street and turns left onto Jean Batten Place. He  walks on Fort Street with a number of other males before coming to a stop outside Sapphire Club.

The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance and was released later the next morning. However, he has been suffering ongoing pain to the back of his head, as well as dizziness, and has been advised to continue to monitor his injury.

This was a completely random and unprovoked attack and the victim does not know why he was targeted. Finding the person responsible will give the victim peace of mind and will help with the healing process.

Police encourage anyone who was at the scene on the night or anyone who can identify the suspect to get in touch.

The suspect is described as:

  • Approx. 18 - 25 years old
  • Around 170 - 180cm tall

The suspect was wearing:

  • A distinctive red cap with a white sticker or logo on the front worn backwards
  • White sneakers with black heels or soles
  • A black satchel worn across his body
