Police in Rotorua are investigating an aggravated robbery that occurred at a store in the suburb of Sunnybrook in June.

At around 5pm on Sunday 6th of June a male entered the store armed with a knife, and attempted to go round behind the counter, but it was blocked off.

The victim was at the rear of the store when she heard the door buzzer go off and saw the man entering with a knife. She left through the back door with her young child to raise the alarm.

The male climbed over the counter and took cigarettes from the cabinet, he then tried to take what police believe was cash from under the counter, and jumped back over the counter, leaving through the front door.

He was only in the store for a short amount of time, but he appeared to know what he was targeting.

The suspect is described as:

  • Large build
  • Wearing an orange hoodie and a mask
  • Bare feet, with socks used as gloves

CCTV footage shows the mask only partially covering his face, and police are sure someone will recognise him.

Police want to hear from anyone who may know the male, or was in the area on the night and may have seen him running down the street. He may have had a vehicle waiting and police are appealing for any sightings of him or a potential getaway vehicle that evening.

The victim was left traumatised, and is reminded of the event every time the shop door buzzer goes off. Police would like to locate the suspect to give the victim some peace of mind and restore a sense of safety to the local community.
