Police are investigating an assault with intent to rape that took place in the Saxton Field Recreation Reserve in Nelson at 9.30pm on Thursday 24th June.

The victim was walking along the access road heading towards Champion Road talking to her husband on the phone, using AirPods, when she saw a male approaching her on the same side of the road. She moved to the side of the path to let him pass but as he got closer he attacked her and pushed her onto the ground. He then dragged her by her ankles 12.9 metres on her back on the bark and into the shrubs.

He attempted to pull her trousers down, while she screamed, begging him not to hurt her. He stopped momentarily, which gave her time to get away, and she ran down the road further towards Champion Road. While she ran away she called a friend who raised the alarm with Police and met her out on the road.

Police attended the scene, along with the dog unit, but unfortunately weren’t able to locate the suspect.

The victim is extremely traumatised as a result of the event, which occurred out of the blue while she was minding her own business.

The suspect is described as:

  • 5’9”
  • Medium build
  • Face covered

Police want to speak to anyone who may have seen someone fitting this description in the area around this time, or anyone else who can provide information.
