29th September 2022

On Friday 12th August at around 3:15pm in Aro Valley, the victim was sitting in his car outside his house when he was approached and threatened by a man with a firearm. Police believe it was a genuine silver and black handgun.

The suspect demanded money from the victim, and while he has handed over some money, the suspect wanted more, making it clear that he wants valuable property.

The victim noticed two members of the public walking past. Thinking he won’t be shot in daylight in front of other people, he’s run to ask for help.

Witnesses have seen the suspect chasing after the victim and return to the scene of the robbery a short time later. His movements after that are unknown.

Once the victim realises he’s no longer being followed he has come out of hiding and gone to his house, accompanied by a member of the public and talked to the victim's partner. The couple decide to pack up some valuables and go to their new apartment that they were due to move into later that weekend.

Returning to pick up another load of property at about 6pm they've found a burglary has taken place. Muddy footprints were present, valuable property stolen and a threatening message left. This has added further distress to the victims.

Based on multiple witness statements, the suspect is described as:

  • Male
  • Average height
  • Medium build
  • Aged in his 20's, or possibly early 30's
  • Wearing dark clothing with a yellow fluorescent high vis vest over the top

One of the witnesses took a photo of a blue BMW that was parked in the area and multiple witnesses have seen people interacting with that car at the time of the incident.

Police aren’t saying the vehicle, its owner or occupants were involved, but Police do think they could have some valuable information.

That same blue BMW is seen four days later at a petrol station in Wellington. There is footage of it interacting with another vehicle, a silver Mercedes. There is also footage of the two people that were with these vehicles interacting with each other and then traveling in convoy back up north, towards Auckland.

It’s important to note Police aren’t saying that the owner or occupants were involved in the robbery, but they do need to speak to these two men. It’s believed they will have information that can help make in-roads with the investigation.
