Rotorua Police are investigating an alleged assault and aggravated robbery of a Rotorua bus driver on Tuesday 5th July.

At about 7:20am, the bus driver picked up a young man on Wrigley Road. The passenger paid his fare and sat down near the driver. A few stops later on Ford Road, the passenger pushed the button to request a stop. Once the bus came to a stop near Pullar Park, the passenger went up to the driver, presented a knife and put it to the victim’s neck, demanding money from the cash box.

The passenger tried to grab the money box and the victim, cornered in his seat, struggled with him trying to fend him off. At this point the attacker lunged and sliced at the victim’s arm with the knife. The attacker then fled the bus and ran back towards Bellingham Cres where he was last seen.

The attacker may be a local and he would have had a large quantity of coins following the robbery.

The attacker was described as:

  • Male
  • Approx 20 years
  • Approx 171cm / 5’7

Wearing:

  • black jacket
  • black pants
  • black backpack
  • a medical mask

The victim has great pride in serving his community and while this has changed his perspective, he will never lose his love for transporting locals and doing a genuine public service.

If you recognise the male or know anything about this incident, please contact Rotorua Police.
