Case 2: Featured Case - Parnell Assault, Auckland
On Thursday 5th May at 6:13pm a man received potentially life threatening injuries, including a fractured eye socket, after a prolonged assault on Parnell Road.
The victim was walking down Parnell Road between Birdwood and Gibraltar Crescents when a male wearing a white t-shirt and grey shorts and carrying paint rollers said something to the victim. When the victim asked the suspect what he meant by what he had said, the suspect attacked the victim, throwing him to the ground, hitting him over 40 times, gouging his eye and grabbing him by his hair and slamming his head into the ground.
The attack only ended when a member of the public intervened. The victim followed the suspect to Tilden Street where he lost sight of him. The man was about 190cm (6ft) tall, and of medium build.
Police inquiries have found additional footage of a male on St Stephens Avenue who matches the description. While Police aren’t saying it’s the same person they would like to speak with him as he may have valuable information. In this footage the male appears to be wearing glasses.
The CCTV footage shows several people walking and driving past the attack. Police recognise that these witnesses may not have felt safe to intervene. They can help get resolution for the victim by coming forward now with any details which could really help the investigation.
