NZ Police have welcomed the release of the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security.

The New Zealand Government, led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New Zealand Defence Force, New Zealand Police and Ministry for Women, has developed a National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security for the period 2015 to 2019. The Plan outlines how New Zealand implements United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security and other related resolutions, as well as setting out areas for future development.

New Zealand’s National Action Plan recognises that the role of women is critical to efforts to maintain international peace and security.

Assistant Commissioner, Malcolm Burgess says NZ women in policing are regularly deployed on overseas missions in leadership and front-line roles where they make enduring connections with local communities.

“Women who live in these countries have an essential role to play in ensuring peace and security in their own communities.  Our staff have an essential role to play in helping them achieve this.”

“We are very proud of the work all our staff deployed internationally do to protect and assist communities.”

“Our women police staff play a particularly significant role in building trust and confidence in the communities they work in.”

New Zealand Police currently has 12 women deployed internationally out of a total of 67 staff deployed. This includes women working in the Solomon Islands, Bougainville, Timor-Leste, Vanuatu and Tuvalu and throughout the Pacific with the Pacific Prevention of Domestic Violence Programme (PPDVP). The PPDVP is an ongoing programme to reduce sexual violence, intimate partner violence and violence against women and girls across the Pacific.

NZ Police also support the Women’s Advisory Network across the 21 member states of the Pacific Island Chiefs of Police Secretariat.
